They will also receive a bridle and harness package donated by Duffy’s Pets and Tanzilla Harness Supply.

Info for the 40 miler

Required Gear:

  • Sled bag capable of carrying a dog;
  • Snow hook and/or snub line;
  • Headlamp with spare batteries;
  • Sufficient dog and human food for your time on the trail plus contingency.
  • Dog booties are recommended but not required.

Time cut off for 40 miler: 8 hours

Purse: The DPSAY board has unanimously decided that instead of a purse, all proceeds will be donated to Lindsay Caskenette. However, there will be swag, including beverages donated by Winterlong Brewing Co.

Trail description: The trail begins with a straight shot across a field which leads to a slight downhill with a bridge that crosses a frozen creek. The drop on either side of the bridge is about 6 inches so it’s not paramount to cross the creek on the bridge. After the bridge, you enter another field. The trail then hits the powerline (turn left) for ~four miles, with the exception of crossing two roads in the Mendenhall Subdivision. Turn left of the powerline and enter a narrow bush trail. From there you parallel the Alaska Highway until you cross the Mendenhall River. After the river crossing there is another narrow winding bush trail that leads you back to the powerline. You turn left onto the powerline and keep going straight until you see markers directing you right, onto Taye Lake Road. You are on Tay Lake Rd for ~9 miles until you reach a cabin on your right, then you take a left turn around a large tree. Do not go straight as it takes you onto the Lake. Retrace your steps back. The trail is around 38 miles.

Trail boss: Nathaniel Hamlyn
Race marshall & judge: Greg Newby

Directions: 96407 Alaska Highway, right before the Mendenhall Subdivision entrance. Driveway entrance is on your right, 5kms after the Kusawa Lake turnoff and right after a “Custom Cutting Sign”. You will see a Trail Marker at the driveway entrance. Note there are no facilities at the start (it’s a private residence). Come prepared to clean your straw, feces, etc., and bring them away with you.

The location is the green dot on the map.
